Frequently Asked Questions about Ash Scattering
What is unaccompanied ash scattering?

Can I witness the scattering at a later date?
Our service is designed for unaccompanied scattering, meaning family members are not present during the actual event. However, we provide a custom engraved wooden plaque with GPS coordinates with a scene from the scattering location, so you can connect with the location and the moment.
Can I choose the date or location of the scattering?
Our team understands that choosing a resting place for your loved one’s ashes is a supremely important decision— So, if you have a special location or date in mind please feel free to reach out through our contact form or email us at bonaventurememorial@gmail.com, and we will work hard to try to facilitate honoring their memory in a way that you think best reflects their life.
Is your service environmentally friendly?
Yes. We prioritize eco-conscious practices in every part of our process—using biodegradable scattering techniques to prevent environmental disruption at all locations. Our staff also partners with consulting park rangers with expertise in soil, aquatic, historical, and archeological impacts. Your loved one’s legacy will be honored in a way that preserves the natural world.
Is it too late to scatter ashes if I’ve had them for years?
Never. In fact, many people feel called to scatter ashes only when the timing and setting feel truly right. Whether it's been a season or many years, nature welcomes your loved one home at any moment. Our service helps transform long-held grief into a sacred act of remembrance—honoring your loved one with a final journey into landscapes of profound beauty and peace.

Why is timing important for the scattering ceremony?
Timing enhances the beauty and serenity of the experience. We schedule ceremonies to align with optimal conditions—such as the vibrant wildflower blooms on Mt. Rainier or the serenity of Zion—ensuring a respectful and memorable tribute that honors the legacy and dignity of your individual loved one. Bonaventure

What is the process for scattering ashes?
After you select a location, our team receives the ashes directly. Are there any legal regulations regarding ash scattering?
Yes, regulations vary by location. We ensure all necessary permits and guidelines are followed for each scattering site, allowing for a legal and respectful process. We take responsibility for filing paperwork, work to comply with environmental best practices, and navigate all logistical challenges around the ash scattering service.
Can I include personal items or mementos with the ashes?
To preserve the integrity of each location, we do not include personal items with the ashes. This approach ensures a respectful and discreet tribute that doesn't disrupt the beauty of the final resting place.

What should I do with the ashes if I decide to use your service?
You can securely package the ashes in a free container and kit provided by USPS. Simply follow the kit’s directions to ship them to us, and we'll handle the rest. (Some families may opt to have their funeral home ship ashes directly to us— all funeral coordinators are extremely familiar with the USPS shipping kits for cremains.)
Are there any costs associated with scattering in national parks or protected areas?
BONAVENTURE covers all fees and associated costs for locations that require permits or have other expenses. We manage all necessary arrangements, ensuring compliance with regulations, so you can focus on honoring your loved one without added stress. We cover these fees as we strive to make sure that there aren’t any surprise costs or hidden charges.
Do you offer any additional services for memorialization?
Yes, we offer a handcrafted wooden plaque as part of each package. Each plaque is custom engraved by our in-house wood smith with your loved one's name, a scene from the scattering location, and the GPS coordinates of the scattering location. Additionally, you have the option to have a small portion of the ashes permanently encased within the plaque, at no extra charge.
Can I include a personal message or reading to be part of the ceremony?
Yes, many families choose to include a short reading, quote, or personal message. You can send this to us in writing, and our team will respectfully include it during the scattering ceremony.
Can I split the ashes and scatter part of them myself?
